PLDA workshop on "Snow and Ice" in Notodden/N - 26.–31.01.2009

The exciting interaction of architecture and snow, ice and lighting design will be the theme of the PLDA workshop in the south-east Norwegian town Notodden!

Notodden has a lot going for it: beautiful scenery, a direct waterway link to the sea, a history of hydro-power and paper production, one of the few original stave churches left in Norway, and Europe’s biggest blues festival.
For 51 weeks in the year Notodden goes about its daily business, part of which is focussing on how to revitalise the town centre, create a meaningful link to the former industrial area on the waterfront and encourage more people to visit and settle here.

The team of architects, urban planners, politicians and cultural officers have come to the conclusion that designed lighting is a key element to enhancing the ambience of the town and improving the local economy. An exciting and profitable event such as the blues festivals cannot be maintained for more than a week.
Notodden are looking for an event during the winter month that will attract attention to their perhaps sometimes underrated town and provide enjoyment and inspiration in the dark months of the year.

The PLDA (Professional Lighting Designers’ Association) workshop will comprise developing and realising lighting concepts for six different project sites in the town, the resulting installations remaining in place for a three- week exhibition for other professional planners and the general public to view and enjoy.
The six workshop teams of young designers, students and professionals will each be headed by an experienced independent lighting designer who will analyse real sites and implement the design concepts they develop.

The workshop heads are:

Peter List, Hamburg, Germany - The Villa
Philip Rose, London, UK - The Waterfront
Cinzia Ferrara, PLDA, Milan, Italy - The Museum Square
Niklas Ödman, PLDA, Stockholm, Sweden - The Bridge and Pylons
Alfred Borden, PLDA, IALD, Philadelphia, USA - The Church
Gudjon L. Sigurdsson, PLDA, Reykjavik, Iceland - The Power Station

The workshop week is accompanied by a one-day conference which will include the presentation of the project concepts offering the participants the opportunity to present their design concepts to a professional audience.
